National Guard can detain anti-ICE rioters in Los Angeles, DHS confirms

The Department of Homeland Security has authorized National Guardsmen deployed to Los Angeles to detain anti-ICE rioters temporarily. President Donald Trump has sent 4,000 National Guardsmen to the city to address the ongoing riots. However, Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman mentioned that there have been only a few instances where civilians have been detained.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the troops are present to safeguard ICE agents and other federal law enforcement groups. If rioters target ICE law enforcement officers, military personnel have the authority to detain them until law enforcement officers make the arrest.

Sherman informed the Associated Press that approximately 500 National Guard troops have been trained to assist agents in executing immigration operations in Los Angeles. Immigration officials have shared images of National Guard soldiers providing security for Department of Homeland Security agents.

The National Guard soldiers have temporarily detained anti-ICE protesters in recent days, although the number of incidents has decreased due to the calming situation. Sherman clarified that the soldiers do not engage in arrests or law enforcement activities. They release the agitators once the police take them into custody.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has criticized the Trump administration for deploying 2,000 National Guard members from the state without consulting California’s law enforcement leaders. The Trump administration defends its ICE operations as targeting criminal illegal immigrants involved in serious offenses.

The goal of these operations is to remove individuals such as killers, rapists, gang members, drug dealers, human traffickers, and domestic abusers from the streets. Fox News reporter Greg Wehner contributed to this report.
