An Indiana Army National Guard soldier tragically passed away in a “non-combat related incident” in Iraq shortly after Christmas, as confirmed by the National Guard to Fox News. Capt. Eric Richard Hart, 34, hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, lost his life on December 28 while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve in the Middle East. Hart was a dedicated member of the Headquarters & Headquarters Battalion, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard, with an impressive 11-year tenure. Throughout his service, he was honored with accolades such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, among others. In 2015, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant from the Officer Candidate School at Camp Atterbury.

Eric Hart, describing him as an “integral part of our team” who will be dearly missed. The Department of Defense also announced the death of the Indiana Army National Guard soldier who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq. The U.S. military has plans to reduce its presence in Iraq, with the mission of coalition forces against ISIS expected to conclude by September 2025.
