On Wednesday, the NBA unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by Private Equity Mogul Bill Chishholm, a deal that appreciates the franchise on more than US $ 6.1 billion ever for an American professional sports team.

The competition said that the transaction is expected to close soon. If this is the case, Chisholm will become the owner of at least 51 percent of the team, with full control by 2028 for a price that could yield the total value for US $ 7.3 billion.

The previous record for an American sports franchise was the US $ 6.05 billion paid for the Washington commanders of the NFL in 2023. The record price for an NBA team was the US $ 4-billard mortgage agency owner Ishbia for the Phoenix Suns in 2023.

Chisholm, a resident of Massachusetts and graduated from Dartmouth College and Penn’s Wharton School of Business, is the managing partner of the Symphony Technology Group established in California. The new ownership group also includes Boston business people Rob Hale, a current shareholder of Celtics, and Bruce Beal Jr.

WYC Grousbeck led the ownership group that the team bought in 2002 for US $ 360 million and chairman of NBA championships in 2008 and ’24. The 18 NBA titles of the franchise is a record.

Chishholm Outbid At least two other groups, one led by previous Celtics Minority Partner Steve Pagliuca. Pagliuca has since announced plans for but the WNBA Connecticut Sun for US $ 325 million and moves them to Boston, but the Women’s League is bent at the deal.
