NDP MP Angus calls for investigation into Elon Musk over potential election interference

New Democrat MP Charlie Angus is raising concerns about potential interference by tech billionaire Elon Musk and his social media platform X in the upcoming federal election. In a letter to Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault, Angus highlighted Musk’s involvement in recent elections in various countries, where he has donated millions to conservative candidates and amplified the messages of candidates he supports.
Angus expressed worries about Musk forming alliances with right-wing populist leaders, promoting extremist influencers, and spreading hate and disinformation targeting marginalized groups. He pointed out that Musk has now turned his attention to Canadian politics, praising the Conservative Party leader, aligning with far-right influencers, and criticizing the current prime minister.
The MP called on Elections Canada to investigate X and potential manipulation by Musk or right-wing influencers. He urged for transparency in X’s algorithms to prevent interference in the electoral process. Angus emphasized the need for vigilance, especially after Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg announced plans to ease content restrictions, potentially enabling misinformation and foreign interference.
Angus believes Musk’s control over X poses a significant threat, given his willingness to intervene in other countries’ affairs. He expressed concerns about the platform being used to sway political outcomes, citing Musk’s support for the far-right AfD party in Germany as an example of potential interference.
While the Commissioner of Canada Elections office is responsible for investigations and enforcement, Elections Canada takes foreign interference seriously. Minister of Democratic Institutions Ruby Sahota emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting democracy and electoral systems from threats while upholding free speech and diverse perspectives.
Aengus Bridgman, director of the Media Ecosystem Observatory, supported Angus’s concerns, highlighting the need for transparency and communication regarding Musk’s influence on X. He warned that Musk’s control over the platform could impact the upcoming election and called for vigilance from Canadians.
Overall, Angus’s call for an investigation into Elon Musk and X reflects the growing concerns about foreign interference in Canadian elections and the need to safeguard democratic processes from external influences. As the election approaches, it is crucial to remain vigilant and ensure that electoral integrity is maintained.
