Netanyahu asks Dutch leader for increased security after attacks, IDF plans rescue mission in Amsterdam

In a recent development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reached out to his Dutch counterpart, Prime Minister Dick Schoof, in the wake of a violent attack on fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC soccer team in Amsterdam. The Israeli fans were targeted by anti-Israel protesters, resulting in injuries to up to 20 Israelis and leaving seven others unreachable.

Netanyahu expressed his grave concern over the “premeditated attacks” and urged Prime Minister Schoof to enhance security measures for Israelis in the Netherlands. Following their discussion, Israeli air carrier El Al has arranged for planes to fly to Amsterdam on Shabbat to evacuate Israelis from the city. Additionally, the Israeli Defense Forces, initially planning a rescue mission, have stood down but are open to examining exceptional requests for assistance.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has taken proactive steps by adding more phone lines at the embassy and in the situation room to assist Israeli nationals affected by the attacks. Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the violence, likening it to the alarming events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists targeted Jews in southern Israel.

Herzog emphasized the severity of the situation, calling it an “antisemitic pogrom” unfolding in Amsterdam. He stressed the need for countries to uphold the values of freedom and ensure the safety of all individuals. Reports have surfaced suggesting that some fans may have engaged in chanting anti-Arab slogans before the game, further escalating tensions.

Prime Minister Schoof has labeled the attacks as “antisemitic” and vowed to track down and prosecute the perpetrators responsible for the violence. Videos circulating on social media captured multiple fights breaking out outside the stadium where Maccabi Tel Aviv FC was playing against Ajax. Earlier reports from Spanish media had indicated that anti-Israel groups planned to protest outside the stadium during the match.

Despite the IDF’s decision to bar soldiers from deploying to Amsterdam, individual exceptional requests for assistance will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The international community has expressed solidarity with the Israeli fans and condemned the violence targeting them in Amsterdam. The Dutch government is committed to addressing the situation and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals within its borders.

As tensions continue to simmer, it is crucial for authorities to take swift action to prevent further incidents and uphold the principles of freedom and tolerance. The Israeli government remains vigilant in protecting its citizens and expects cooperation from its international counterparts to address and combat antisemitism and violence against minorities.
