Netanyahu hails ‘historic’ fall of Bashar Assad in Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime in Syria, attributing it to Israeli attacks on Iran and Hezbollah. Speaking after Assad fled Damascus with his family, Netanyahu warned of the dangers accompanying the fall of the regime.
Netanyahu emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “The collapse of the Assad regime, the tyranny in Damascus, offers great opportunity but also is fraught with significant dangers. This collapse is the direct result of our forceful action against Hezbollah and Iran, Assad’s main supporters. It set off a chain reaction of all those who want to free themselves from this tyranny and its oppression.”
The Israeli leader highlighted the immediate actions taken by the Israel Defense Forces, who secured positions abandoned by the Syrian Army near the border with Israel. Netanyahu expressed concerns about the collapse of the Separation of Forces Agreement from 1974 between Israel and Syria, which had held for 50 years before its recent dissolution.
Netanyahu extended a “hand of peace” to the people of Syria, including Muslims who desire peaceful coexistence with Israel. He also acknowledged the diverse population in Syria, offering peace to the Druze, Kurds, Christians, and other groups seeking peaceful relations with Israel.
As events in Syria continue to unfold, Netanyahu affirmed Israel’s commitment to defending its borders and ensuring the security of the State of Israel. While expressing a desire for neighborly and peaceful relations with the emerging forces in Syria, Netanyahu reiterated that Israel would take necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty.
