New border sector becomes busiest as overall numbers continue to plummet

The El Paso sector of the southwest border has seen a significant increase in activity, becoming the busiest sector in the country. According to the latest data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the El Paso sector recorded 2,110 encounters in February. This marks a stark contrast from the same month last year, when there were 124,215 encounters recorded at the southwest border overall.

The overall encounters at the southwest border have plummeted by 94.1% compared to last year. This decline can be attributed to the strict immigration policies put in place by the Trump administration, which have empowered border agents to use “maximum consequences” for border jumpers. The El Paso sector, which stretches from Hudspeth County, Texas, to the New Mexico-Arizona state line, has experienced a significant drop in encounters compared to last year’s numbers.

Despite becoming the busiest sector on the southwest border, the El Paso sector still saw a significant decrease in encounters compared to the previous year. In February of last year, the sector had 23,919 encounters, while this year it only recorded just over 2,000 encounters. This trend is mirrored in other sectors as well, with San Diego sector experiencing a decline of 94.8% in encounters from the previous year.

CBP has nine sectors along the southwest border, with some sectors recording fewer than 200 encounters in February. The El Centro sector in California’s Imperial Valley and the Big Bend sector in West Texas both saw a drastic reduction in encounters compared to the same time last year.

The El Paso sector’s rise as the busiest in terms of encounters with illegal migrants highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border patrol agents. The strict enforcement of immigration policies has led to a significant decrease in overall encounters at the southwest border. It remains to be seen how these trends will continue to evolve in the coming months.
