Protein pops up in everything, from popcorn and tortilla chips to coffee and ice cream, and now in a new form that is gaining attention.
High protein diets have become more popular in the past year, with consumers seeking products that promote muscle repair, immune function, and metabolism. Protein shakes, typically made from whey concentrate and available in flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and peanut butter, offer a creamy, milkshake-like way to get essential nutrients.
Now, a new player in the protein supplement market is clear protein. Made from whey protein isolate, this product comes in ready-to-drink bottles or powders that transform into brightly colored, refreshing drinks when mixed with water.

“Clear protein fills a gap in the market for consumers who want high protein without the heaviness,” says registered dietitian Lauren Manaker in a recent interview with Vogue Magazine. “It is visually appealing and aligns with the trend towards lighter, healthier products.”
Whey protein isolate is lower in fat, carbohydrates, and lactose compared to concentrate, making it a suitable option for those with digestive issues. It also offers a higher protein concentration per weight.

Both whey protein isolate and concentrate provide 20 to 25 grams of protein per serving, making them suitable for post-workout recovery and muscle building.
Despite the trend, experts caution that clear protein products may contain artificial flavors and sweeteners to compensate for the lack of fats and sugars found in traditional protein powders. Additionally, they can be more expensive than other protein supplements.

“Until we have more data to prove otherwise, neither form of protein is superior,” says Manaker. “It’s all about finding what works best for your goals and lifestyle.”
The recommended protein intake for adults is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, but athletes, older adults, and pregnant or breastfeeding women may require more protein. Both whey protein isolate and concentrate offer essential amino acids, making them suitable options for those looking to increase their protein intake.
Ultimately, the choice between clear protein and traditional protein supplements depends on individual preferences and dietary needs. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional or nutritionist before making any significant changes to your diet.
