New Orleans attack: Superdome on lockdown for security sweeps

New Orleans Superdome Lockdown Lifted After Tragic New Year’s Incident

The Superdome, a renowned venue set to host the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game between Georgia and Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, was placed on lockdown for security sweeps following a devastating incident in New Orleans. A truck crashed into a New Year’s crowd about a mile away, resulting in the loss of 10 lives and leaving more than 30 individuals injured.

Employees with offices in the Superdome, including officials associated with the Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Conference, were instructed to refrain from coming into work until further notice. Despite the lockdown, there was no immediate indication that the Sugar Bowl, scheduled to commence at 7:45 p.m., would be postponed.

Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley expressed deep sorrow over the morning’s tragic events and assured ongoing discussions with authorities at the local, state, and federal levels. The Sugar Bowl Committee remained in contact with authorities to determine the feasibility of proceeding with the game as planned.

While initial reports did not suggest a delay in the Sugar Bowl, officials awaited clearance from authorities to ensure the safety of hosting the event at the 70,000-seat stadium. The Georgia and Notre Dame football teams, already in New Orleans since Sunday, were staying at downtown hotels near the incident site.

The University of Georgia Athletic Association confirmed the safety of all team members and official travel party personnel. Additional security measures were implemented around the Superdome to enhance safety for the Sugar Bowl attendees.

The NFL, which is set to hold the Super Bowl at the Superdome on February 9, expressed condolences over the tragic incident. Comprehensive security plans have been developed in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for attendees.
