New Republican Governors Association chair says ‘focus’ is on helping Trump get ‘off to a strong start’

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, the newly elected chair of the Republican Governors Association, recently highlighted that a key mission for GOP governors moving forward will be to support President-elect Trump. Speaking at the RGA’s annual winter meeting at a waterfront resort in Marco Island, Florida, Kemp emphasized the importance of getting the Trump administration off to a strong start.

Kemp, a popular conservative two-term governor, noted that Republican governors had spent the past four years “pushing back” against President Biden’s administration. He expressed the need for GOP governors to focus on ensuring the success of the incoming Trump administration and undoing what the Biden-Harris administration had implemented.

In the wake of his 2020 election loss to President Biden, Trump had heavily criticized Kemp for not assisting in overturning his narrow defeat in Georgia. However, after Kemp decisively won the 2022 GOP gubernatorial primary against former Sen. David Perdue, Trump’s tone towards the governor shifted. The two politicians even joined forces in October to survey hurricane damage in Georgia, marking their first collaboration in four years.

Looking ahead, Kemp expressed his commitment to supporting a Republican White House administration and working towards successful outcomes. He highlighted the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey in 2025, as well as the 36 races in 2026, emphasizing the importance of raising enough funds to remain competitive.

While Kemp is term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026, he vowed to remain actively involved in securing Republican victories in Georgia and other states. With a keen focus on supporting GOP candidates and policies, Kemp expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.

Regarding a potential Senate bid against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia, Kemp remained open to the possibility but stressed his current commitment to fundraising for the RGA. When asked about potential future political endeavors, including a White House run in 2028, Kemp maintained a diplomatic stance, keeping all options open.

As the newly elected chair of the RGA, Kemp’s leadership and dedication to advancing Republican interests are poised to shape the party’s trajectory in the coming years.
