Newsom rails against Trump’s 25% tariff plan during southern border visit: ‘It’s a betrayal’

California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly criticized President-Elect Trump’s proposal to impose 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada during a visit to the southern border to announce plans to finish constructing the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry. Newsom described the tariffs as “one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history” that would have a significant impact on Californians’ wallets and small businesses, particularly farmers across the state.

In a passionate speech, Newsom warned that the tariffs would disproportionately affect lower wage workers, who would end up paying over half of these taxes. He emphasized the importance of the economic vibrancy of the region and called the tariffs a “betrayal” that was unfolding in real time. Newsom expressed concern for farmers and ranchers who would be hit hard by the tariffs, especially given the large number of undocumented farm workers in California.

Newsom also announced plans for the completion of the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry by December 2027, with hopes of fostering two-way trade between Mexico and the U.S. He stressed the importance of border security while also emphasizing economic security and maintaining partnerships with neighboring countries.

Additionally, Newsom unveiled a new plan to strengthen border security in collaboration with the California National Guard, targeting the flow of fentanyl and illegal weapons. This initiative is part of Newsom’s efforts to reframe the conversation around illegal immigration and position the state for potential legal battles with the incoming Trump administration.

California has a history of challenging Trump administration policies through lawsuits, with the state’s Department of Justice leading over 122 lawsuits between 2017 and 2021. Newsom has pushed for $25 million from the state legislature to bolster legal defense against potential federal lawsuits, as part of an effort to “Trump-proof” California.

As California remains a sanctuary state for various progressive policies, it could face increased scrutiny from the Trump administration, particularly in light of Trump’s mass deportation plan for illegal immigrants. Newsom’s proactive approach to defending the state’s policies and values sets the stage for potential conflicts with the incoming administration.

In conclusion, Newsom’s strong stance against the proposed tariffs and his efforts to protect California’s interests reflect his commitment to safeguarding the state’s economy and values in the face of potential challenges from the federal government.
