Newsom signs the redistribution plan of California, since Texas completes new maps

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a legislative package on August 21, 2025, calling for a special election to redraw the state’s congressional map. The move comes in response to Texas’ recent redistricting efforts, which have been criticized for favoring Republicans.

The legislation passed in the California Assembly by a vote of 57-20, and in the State Senate by a vote of 30-8. Newsom wasted no time in signing the bill into law, doing so just 30 minutes after it was approved by the legislature.

The new congressional map is expected to favor Democrats, potentially shifting the balance of power in the state’s delegation to Congress. This move is seen as a strategic response to Texas’ redistricting efforts, which many believe were designed to give Republicans an unfair advantage in future elections.

The special election to approve the redrawn congressional map is scheduled for November 4, giving voters the opportunity to weigh in on the changes. Newsom’s decision to sign the legislation reflects his commitment to ensuring fair and equitable representation for all Californians.
