NFL Draft: 49ers’ former top selection eyed by CFL team

The San Francisco 49ers made a bold move in the 2021 NFL Draft when they traded multiple first-round picks to select quarterback Trey Lance at No. 3 overall. The team believed that Lance was the quarterback of their future, given his impressive college career at North Dakota State, where he threw for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,100 yards in the 2019 season.

However, despite the high expectations, Lance’s time with the 49ers did not pan out as planned. He struggled to establish himself as the franchise quarterback and eventually hit free agency after a brief stint with the Dallas Cowboys. Recently, reports have surfaced that the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders have added Lance to their negotiation list, potentially giving him a new opportunity to showcase his talents on the field.

Lance faced challenges during his NFL career, starting as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo and only managing to start two games. In 2022, he was named the starting quarterback but suffered an injury in Week 2, sidelining him for the rest of the season. By the time he recovered, another quarterback had taken over the starting role, leading to Lance’s eventual release from the Cowboys.

Despite these setbacks, Lance is determined to revive his NFL career and is currently working hard to get back on the field. While playing in the CFL may not have been his initial plan, it could provide him with a valuable opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially make a comeback to the NFL. Lance comes from a football family, with his father having played in the CFL for the Roughriders, showing that success can come from various paths in the football world.

As Lance navigates this new chapter in his career, it remains unclear what his next steps will be. At just 24 years old, he still has plenty of time to make an impact in the football world. Whether he returns to the NFL or thrives in the CFL, Lance’s determination and talent are sure to be assets in whatever path he chooses to pursue.
