NFL news: Eagles release leads Darius Slay’s wife to post heartbreaking tweet

The Philadelphia Eagles made a tough decision during their Super Bowl LIX run this past season by cutting veteran cornerback Darius Slay. Slay, a six-time Pro Bowler, had been a key player in the Eagles’ defense for the past five seasons, helping anchor the best pass defense in the NFL in 2024.
The move to release Slay was reportedly a cap-saving decision, as the team saved $4.3 million against their cap. The emergence of rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, who had impressive debut seasons, also played a role in Slay’s release. The Eagles needed to free up some money for future free agency moves, and unfortunately, that meant parting ways with Slay.
Slay’s wife, Jennifer Slay, took to social media to share her reaction to the news. She posted on X, expressing her emotions with the words “Real tears.” On her Instagram Story, she shared a picture of her celebrating the Super Bowl victory with her husband, along with the caption “Philly,” accompanied by heart and teary-eyed emojis.
The business side of the NFL can be harsh, and Slay’s release is another example of the tough decisions teams have to make. Now, Slay will be looking for a new team for the upcoming season, marking his third NFL team after spending his first seven seasons with the Detroit Lions.
In his 14 games last season, Slay showcased his skills with 13 passes defended, 49 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. According to CBS Sports, Slay is looking to play one more year and is eyeing a contender to chase another Super Bowl ring.
Potential landing spots for Slay could include a reunion with the Lions, who could use help in their secondary, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, where defensive coordinator Teryl Austin previously worked with Slay in Detroit.
The NFL landscape is ever-changing, and for players like Slay, adapting to new teams and challenges is part of the game. As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see where Slay lands and how he contributes to his new team’s success on the field.
