NFL rumors: Commanders star reportedly gets permission to seek trade

The Washington Commanders have reportedly granted two-time Pro Bowler Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade, signaling a potential departure for the defensive tackle. Allen, who has spent his entire eight-year career with the Commanders since being drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, is now exploring his options for a new team.

According to multiple reports, the Commanders are committed to facilitating Allen’s move to a good team, whether through a trade or free agency. The 30-year-old has been a key leader in the Commanders’ locker room and has earned respect for his on-field performance and off-field presence.

Last season, Allen’s playing time was limited to eight regular-season games due to a pectoral injury. However, he returned to play in all three of the Commanders’ playoff games, helping the team make a surprise run to the NFC Championship. During the regular season, Allen recorded three sacks, and in the playoffs, he tallied one tackle for loss and two quarterback hits.

Despite his injury setback last season, Allen has been remarkably durable throughout his career, starting no fewer than 15 games in a season for six consecutive years. In 109 games played, he has accumulated an impressive 42 sacks.

With one year remaining on his contract, Allen carries a $15 million salary that is not guaranteed. Should he remain on the roster in 2025, his cap hit will amount to $22.3 million, making him one of the team’s highest-paid players. Given the Commanders’ depth at the defensive tackle position, Allen’s departure appears to be a strategic move to free up cap space and allow younger talent to step up.

Star defensive tackle Daron Payne, who is under contract through the 2026 season, and rookie Johnny Newton, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, are poised to take on larger roles in the Commanders’ defensive line. Newton, who showed promise with two sacks in his rookie season, is expected to compete for Allen’s spot next season.

As the Commanders navigate the transition in their defensive lineup, Allen’s departure marks the end of an era for the team. His contributions on and off the field will be remembered, and fans will be watching closely to see where his next chapter in the NFL will take him.
