Nishnawbe Aski Nation deputy grand chief has ‘nothing to hide,’ says law firm representing Bobby Narcisse

The law firm representing Bobby Narcisse, a deputy grand chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN), has issued a statement denying all allegations against him, labeling them as a “political attack.” Judson Howie LLP, based in Fort Frances, Ontario, released the statement a week after Narcisse confirmed he is under investigation related to NAN’s code of conduct.

Narcisse, one of three deputy grand chiefs of the organization representing 49 First Nations in Ontario, is facing allegations made by Chief Jennifer Constant of Mattagami First Nation. These allegations were presented to NAN’s governance committee in a letter dated April 4.

The specific nature of the allegations against Narcisse remains undisclosed as NAN’s code of conduct is not easily accessible on their website. Judson Howie LLP stated in their letter that their client refutes the allegations, claiming they are a tactic to undermine him and stifle his efforts for transparent governance within NAN.

The law firm asserted that Narcisse is willing to cooperate fully with an impartial investigation, emphasizing his commitment to accountability and transparency. They noted that the deputy grand chief has raised concerns about governance protocols not being followed and decisions being made without proper authorization from NAN chiefs.

NAN has not responded to requests for comments on the investigation or the statement from Judson Howie LLP. The law firm highlighted in their letter that Narcisse is prepared to address any questions or provide information regarding the alleged incidents if oversight is fair and independent.

It was mentioned that several NAN chiefs have already requested for the investigation results to be presented at a chiefs’ assembly promptly. Efforts to reach Chief Jennifer Constant for clarification on the allegations have been made, and any responses will be included in updates to the story.
