NJ Dem gubernatorial candidates vow to impede ICE pursuit of Illegal aliens

New Jersey Democratic gubernatorial candidates made a strong statement during the Garden State’s first primary debate of the year, as they vowed to help illegal immigrants avoid President Donald Trump’s ICE raids. Five out of six candidates raised their hands when asked if they believed that protecting immigrants in New Jersey, even those who are here illegally, should be a goal of the next governor.
The candidates stood united in their commitment to comprehensive immigration reform and prioritizing humanity in the deportation process. However, the discussion became more nuanced when the Laken Riley Act was brought up. The act, signed into law by Trump, detains illegal immigrants accused of committing dangerous crimes.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, who voted in support of the Laken Riley Act, emphasized the importance of distinguishing between innocent undocumented individuals and those who commit violent crimes. He stated that those who pose a threat to public safety should not be allowed to remain in the state or the country.
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop took a different stance, calling the Laken Riley Act “dangerous” as it undermines the authority of the attorney general in New Jersey. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka went further, accusing the Trump administration of pushing a political agenda rooted in white supremacy and racism.
Former New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney emphasized the need to oppose Trump’s inhumane deportations while also acknowledging the importance of holding accountable those who break the law. New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller echoed the sentiment, warning New Jerseyans that they should be concerned about the aggressive tactics of ICE raids.
Despite their strong opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, the Democratic candidates all agreed on the necessity of comprehensive immigration reform. They emphasized the need for a pathway to citizenship for hardworking individuals, including DACA and TPS recipients, as well as the importance of better border security.
In conclusion, the Democratic candidates in New Jersey are united in their support for immigrants and their commitment to standing up to the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies. They recognize the need for reform and a more humane approach to addressing the complex issue of immigration.
