NJ lawmaker crafts state DOGE committee to ‘mirror’ Elon’s brainchild: ‘We need it more’
New Jersey Senator Joe Pennacchio is proposing legislation to establish a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the state, taking inspiration from the efforts of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ohio entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at the federal level. Pennacchio believes that New Jersey needs this department even more than Washington does, citing the state’s significant budget increase of 60% in the past seven fiscal years.
According to Pennacchio, much of this budget increase was due to one-time borrowing during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a potential $4 billion budget deficit next year. He emphasized the importance of finding ways to cut wasteful spending and increase efficiency in order to alleviate the financial burden on New Jersey residents and reduce the need for tax hikes.
The proposed NJDOGE committee would include representatives from the state Treasury, the Chamber of Commerce, as well as bipartisan members from the Senate and General Assembly, along with a public member appointed by the governor. The goal of the committee would be to provide a blueprint for the incoming governor, regardless of party affiliation, on areas where cost savings could be achieved and inefficiencies eliminated to stimulate the economy and reduce taxes.
Several other state senators are reportedly supportive of Pennacchio’s proposal, and there is growing recognition among constituents that disparities exist in funding support from Trenton. Pennacchio highlighted the need to address these disparities and ensure that all districts receive fair and equitable funding.
As New Jersey gears up for the 2025 governor’s race, with a crowded field of candidates from both parties, the establishment of a Department of Government Efficiency could play a crucial role in shaping the state’s economic future. With the support of Senator Robert Singer and others, Pennacchio believes that New Jersey has the opportunity to lead the charge in restoring manufacturing jobs and becoming a model for the Make America Work Again movement.
In addition to his efforts to improve government efficiency, Pennacchio has been vocal about the recent sightings of large drones in his district, criticizing federal officials for their lack of response and calling for greater accountability in national security efforts. As New Jersey faces economic challenges and security concerns, Pennacchio’s push for a DOGE department could offer a path forward towards a more prosperous and secure future for the Garden State.
