No Canadian showdown: De Grasse withdraws from 100m Diamond League race with injury

So much for the Canadian battle in the men’s 100 meters in Stockholm.

Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse pulled out of the race on Sunday due to a groin injury, ruining the chance of a showdown with compatriot Aaron Brown in the seventh Diamond League game of the season.

The two Toronto natives took part in the 200m event in Switzerland’s Lausanne on Friday when Brown came out on top, but their next meeting in the Diamond League will have to wait.

Brown finished fifth in Sunday’s race with a time of 10.27 seconds, making his way through the wet conditions at the Olympic Stadium.

South Africa’s Akani Simbine took the win, crossing the line in 10.03. UK’s Reece Prescott finished second, while Germany’s Joshua Hartman completed the podium.

The Canadian sprinter ran a time of 10.27 in the Diamond League event in Sweden.

With the result, the Canadian moved into third place in the Diamond League 100m ranking.

Fellow Canadian sprinter Jerome Blake finished third in the 100 meters nationally with a time of 10.30, in a race that does not count for Diamond League points.

The Kelowna, BC native finished behind Germany’s Hartman, who won the event, and South Africa’s Ben Richardson.

The next Diamond League stop is July 16 in Chorzów, Poland, just over a month before the world championships in Hungary.
