‘No community should go through this’: Vigil honours Saskatoon international student killed 1 week into job

The city of Saskatoon was illuminated by the flickering of more than 100 candles, as a community came together to honor the life of Alfred Okyere, a 23-year-old homicide victim. Okyere, an international student from Ghana, had arrived in Saskatoon just four months prior with hopes of a better future. Tragically, his dreams were cut short when he was stabbed and killed at his workplace in the city’s north industrial area on January 20th, just one week into his new job.

Family and friends described Okyere as a jovial and hardworking young man who had a deep desire to make a positive impact on the world. He was an active member of the Church of Pentecost in Saskatoon, involved in the Ghanaian community, and took care of his sister’s children with love and dedication.

The community rallied together to show support for Okyere’s family and to commemorate his legacy. City officials, members of the Black and African communities, and other supporters gathered to stand in solidarity with the grieving family. Marvin Ankrah, the secretary of the Ghanaian Association, expressed the importance of coming together to remember Okyere and the values he stood for.

As the candles flickered in the night, Ward 2 Coun. Senos Timon emphasized that Okyere’s tragic death was a loss for the entire community, urging unity and strength in the face of such senseless violence. Okyere’s family is now calling on the justice system for answers and justice, hoping that his story will spark a movement to end workplace violence and create a safer environment for all.

The accused, Troy Francis Leclair, 53, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Okyere’s death. He appeared in court by phone and is scheduled to return next week for further proceedings.

The vigil for Alfred Okyere served as a poignant reminder of the impact of violence and the importance of coming together as a community to support those in need. The memory of Okyere will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire efforts towards a more peaceful and just society.
