Nobody knows why this snowy owl is orange

An Unusual Mystery: The Orange Snowy Owl
Amateur wildlife photographer Julie Maggert had her adrenaline pumping when she finally captured the perfect shot of a snowy owl in Michigan with a rare orange hue. The bird, affectionately named Creamsicle, has left scientists scratching their heads as they try to understand the reason behind its unique coloring.
Maggert, who has been photographing snowy owls for six years, was in awe when she first spotted Creamsicle perched on a utility pole. The bird’s rusty plumage stood out against the snowy backdrop, making for a truly remarkable sight. Experts agree that Creamsicle is a rare find, with some even suggesting that it may be a one-of-a-kind specimen.
Karen Cleveland, a wildlife biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, has been tracking Creamsicle for the past two months. She explains that the bird’s orange coloring could be attributed to a genetic mutation, accidental staining, or deliberate staining for research purposes. However, opinions are divided among scientists, with some questioning the genetic mutation theory put forth by biologist Kevin McGraw.
McGraw suggests that Creamsicle’s unusual coloring could be the result of genes that are normally suppressed being triggered by environmental stressors. However, other experts like ornithologist Geoffrey Hill and David Bird are skeptical of this explanation, pointing out that the pigmentation is not symmetrical and appears on parts of the bird that are typically white.
Scott Weidensaul, co-founder of Project SNOWstorm, has received numerous theories about Creamsicle’s coloring, including the idea that it turned orange from eating shrimp or preened blood into its feathers. However, he believes that the bird was likely accidentally sprayed with dye or paint, possibly from airport de-icing fluid.
Despite the mystery surrounding Creamsicle’s coloring, experts believe that the owl is in good health and will likely molt its orange feathers as it matures. While the true cause of Creamsicle’s unique appearance may remain a mystery, Maggert is content with capturing the moment on camera. She appreciates the intrigue and allure of the unknown, adding to the mystique of this extraordinary snowy owl.
