North-end Halifax community garden sprouts up in new location

The Prescott Street Community Garden Society in Halifax has found a new home at Merv Sullivan Park on Novalea Drive after having to relocate from their original location next to Halifax Water’s reservoir in the city’s north end. The group raised $14,000 to cover the costs of materials like new soil and raised beds for their new garden.

Judy Flora, the chair of the organization, expressed her excitement about the transformation from feeling sad about losing their old garden to seeing the progress at the new location. Halifax Water has generously donated two large water tanks to the new site, and the society has received grants from the province and Halifax Regional Municipality to cover half of their relocation expenses. Additionally, carpentry students from the Nova Scotia Community College built a shed at the new location.

Members of the community garden recently gathered to fill the raised beds with soil that was delivered by truck. Byungmin Kang, a member who enjoys growing tomatoes, peppers, and greens, shared his satisfaction in seeing the empty field turn into a vibrant garden space with the effort of everyone involved.

With the larger area at the new location, the society plans to build around 40 raised beds, including several accessible ones. Carole Konesky, another member, is looking forward to sharing her crops with other gardeners and enjoying the social aspect of the community garden. The group continues to fundraise to further develop the site and plan for the upcoming planting season.

The sense of community and shared passion for gardening is evident among the members of the Prescott Street Community Garden Society as they work together to create a beautiful and thriving garden space at their new location.
