Nova Scotia introduces financial assistance for uninsured wildfire losses

HALIFAX, N.S. — The Nova Scotia government is now accepting applications for financial assistance from those who suffered uninsurable losses during this year’s wildfires.

The Disaster Financial Assistance Program covers up to $200,000 in uninsurable losses for each eligible low-income household, small business, municipality or non-profit group.

Applications can take several months to process while an adjuster determines if they are eligible. Before applying to the program, Nova Scotians are asked to communicate and work with their insurance companies.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2024.

The wildfires in Shelburne County, Yarmouth County and the Halifax Regional Municipality left many residents struggling with damages that are not insurable, noted John Lohr, minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office.

“We are launching this program to help those dealing with extraordinary circumstances where private insurance coverage is either not reasonably available or affordable,” said Lohr.
