Nova Scotia launches $1M fund to support lower-income familes with child with autism
HALIFAX, N.S. — The Nova Scotia government has set aside $1 million to assist families supporting children with autism across the province.
The Autism Family Support Fund will be provide up to $3,000 for lower-income families with a child with autism, aged 16 or younger, to be used to improve home safety, obtain education materials for caregivers, purchase augmentative communication devices, and provide respite care and travel for medical appointments or recreational programming.
“The flexibility of the fund through the one-time grant option or the reimbursement of expenses meets qualifying families where their greatest needs are,” said Cynthia Carroll, executive director of Autism Nova Scotia.
To qualify for funding, a family unit’s income must be below the following maximums:
- Family of two: $43,693;
- Family of three: $51,029;
- Family of four: $58,310; and
- Family of five or more: $65,590.
Families can only avail of the fund once.
Applications are open until funding runs out. Families are encouraged to apply by Feb. 23, with the first review expected in early March.
