NSLC sees 55% increase in thefts compared to last year

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) has reported a concerning 55 per cent increase in thefts across all retail stores in the province during 2024. Spokesperson Terah McKinnon mentioned that this trend aligns with what other retailers are experiencing nationwide, as indicated by Statistics Canada’s data showing a rise in shoplifting crimes in 2023.
According to Statistics Canada, thefts of $5,000 or under saw an 18 per cent increase in 2023. Nova Scotia stood out with the highest shoplifting rates in the country, with 7,167 reported cases in the same year. In response to these alarming statistics, McKinnon assured the public that the NSLC has a dedicated security team and robust monitoring processes in place to address theft issues.
Despite their efforts, McKinnon acknowledged that many shoplifters continue to ignore intervention attempts and leave the premises with stolen goods. She emphasized the importance of not confronting suspected thieves and advised customers to refrain from intervening in such situations. This sentiment was echoed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), with spokesperson Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay warning against potential escalation to violence.
The NSLC is working tirelessly to combat theft and ensure the safety of both customers and staff. As the situation evolves, the corporation remains vigilant in protecting its retail stores and deterring criminal activity. It is essential for the community to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to address this growing issue effectively.
