Nunavut returns to Scotties after one-year absence

Nunavut is making a triumphant return to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts after a one-year absence. The team is filled with excitement and anticipation as they prepare to represent their territory on the national stage once again.
Last year, Nunavut was unable to field a team due to the closure of Iqaluit’s curling rink, which was being used as a set for a new show called North of North. Additionally, there was a shortage of available players, further complicating the situation. However, with the reopening of the rink and the return of key players, Team Nunavut is back in action and ready to compete in Thunder Bay, Ontario next month.
Fans from all across Canada are rallying behind the team, eager to see Nunavut back in the tournament. Julia Weagle, sister of three-time Scotties winner Lisa, will be leading Team Nunavut this year, bringing a wealth of experience and skill to the ice.
Leigh Gustafson, the team’s second, will be making her second appearance at the tournament after serving as an alternate in 2023. Even Curling Canada is thrilled to see Nunavut back in the competition, emphasizing the importance of having all 14 member associations represented at the event.
Peter Van Strien, the secretary-treasurer of the Nunavut Curling Association, is optimistic about the team’s chances this year. While wins may be hard to come by for Nunavut, he believes that the team is competitive and capable of surprising some of the stronger opponents.
In addition to their return to the Scotties, Nunavut is also making waves in other curling events. The team for the Montana’s Brier has been selected, with Shane Latimer set to skip the rink. Furthermore, Nunavut will be represented by both men’s and women’s teams at the Canadian U18 Curling Championships in Saskatoon, demonstrating the growth and potential of the sport in the territory.
Van Strien emphasizes the need for more young people to take up curling in Nunavut to ensure the continued success of the sport. He also highlights the importance of financial support to help cover the costs of competing in national events.
Overall, Nunavut’s return to the Scotties is a testament to the resilience and determination of the team. With the support of fans, sponsors, and Curling Canada, Team Nunavut is ready to make their mark on the tournament once again.
