NWSL stars play final matches ahead of the World Cup
Lynn Williams and Allie Long scored in Gotham’s 2-1 win at home to the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League on Sunday.
Williams scored less than a minute into the second half when she collected a throw-in and quickly turned to fire a shot into the far post with her left foot.
After returning from a lightning 50th minute delay, the Red Stars equalized in the 55th minute. Cari Roccaro bounced off a softened pass from Sarah Griffith and hit the target.
Bianca St-Georges of Saint-Charles-Borromée, Que., played the full 90 minutes for Chicago.
Williams’ seventh goal this season was her last before heading off to her first World Cup. She was named to the US roster for the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
