NY Gov Hochul to ramp up oversight of NYC Mayor Adams amid pressure to remove him

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is set to make an important announcement regarding new state and city bills that would bring additional oversight to the New York City mayor’s office. Sources familiar with the governor’s decision revealed to Fox News on Thursday that this move comes in light of Mayor Eric Adams’ legal troubles and his recent collaboration with former President Donald Trump.

Instead of removing Mayor Adams from office, as initially considered, Governor Hochul is planning to implement guardrails to ensure accountability in City Hall. This could potentially involve the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee the mayor’s office.

Reports suggest that Governor Hochul held meetings with various New York leaders this week to discuss the possibility of removing Mayor Adams from his position. The situation escalated further when senior prosecutors in New York and Washington resigned after refusing to comply with a Department of Justice order to drop charges against Adams.

Eric Adams, a former police officer turned politician, was indicted on charges related to wire fraud, bribery, and seeking campaign funds from foreign sources. The indictment was unveiled in September 2024, to which Adams pleaded not guilty.

Democrats have accused Mayor Adams of attempting to align himself with the Trump administration to evade his criminal charges. However, Adams has vehemently denied any allegations of engaging in quid pro quo deals.

In a statement released on Friday, Adams asserted, “I want to be crystal clear with New Yorkers: I never offered — nor did anyone offer on my behalf — any trade of my authority as your mayor for an end to my case. Never.”

Despite Adams’ denial, Governor Hochul remains troubled by the events unfolding at City Hall. She is reportedly waiting for U.S. District Judge Dale Ho to make a ruling on the Justice Department’s motion to dismiss the case against Adams before finalizing any decisions.

The situation continues to evolve, with tensions running high in New York City’s political landscape. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
