NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani under fire for call to ‘seize’ luxury condos

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party’s candidate for New York City mayor and a self-proclaimed socialist, is once again facing backlash for his radical socialist and communist ideology. Mamdani recently called on the government to “seize” luxury condos to house the homeless during the coronavirus pandemic, sparking controversy and criticism.

In a social media post from March 2020, Mamdani criticized the wealthy elite who own luxury condos as investment properties while homeless individuals suffer on the streets. He advocated for seizing these properties to house the homeless and enact a #HomesGuarantee. Additionally, Mamdani has expressed the need to “de-commodify” housing by converting luxury condos into communal-style living spaces with shared amenities like laundry facilities, kitchens, and food co-ops.

Critics have also highlighted Mamdani’s remarks at a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, where he urged attendees not to compromise on goals like “seizing the means of production.” Furthermore, Mayor Eric Adams, who left the Democratic Party to run as an Independent, criticized Mamdani for quoting communist revolutionary Karl Marx, stating, “Each according to their need, each according to their ability.”

President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani as a “100% Communist Lunatic” and vowed to “save New York City” from him if elected. However, Mamdani has refuted claims of being a communist, identifying as a Democratic socialist inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a more equitable distribution of wealth in the country.
