NYPD continues ‘heightened threat environment’ for Times Square New Years Eve

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is gearing up for the annual Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, which is expected to draw more than a million visitors. This year, the NYPD will be deploying its newest class of over 600 recruits to work their first detail on Tuesday night.

During a press conference on Monday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized that while there are currently no credible threats to the event, the department is operating in a “heightened threat environment” following the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel. The NYPD has been on high alert due to mass demonstrations against Israel, including antisemitic rallies and clashes with police at Columbia University and New York University.

Tisch assured the public that the NYPD will be deploying a significant number of resources to ensure the safety of the event. This includes members of elite specialized units, bomb-sniffing dogs, drones, and the aviation unit monitoring the event and surrounding areas.

In response to recent terror attacks, including a car-ramming incident at a Christmas market in Germany, the NYPD has adjusted its security plans accordingly. Rebecca Weiner, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, stated that the department formulates its security plan based on incidents around the world and in the city. Precautions against vehicle ramming incidents, such as NYPD trucks and blocked cars, will be in place to ensure a safe celebration.

Additionally, the NYPD will be monitoring emerging threats, such as the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA). While there is no specific threat related to the gang at the Times Square event, the NYPD is prepared to address any potential issues.

In terms of security measures, the NYPD will be sealing or removing all manholes, mailboxes, vending machines, and litter baskets in the “frozen zone” around Times Square. Frozen safety lanes will be established using blocker cars and barriers, and pickpocket teams and hotel response teams will be deployed to monitor for suspicious activity.

Despite concerns about high-profile subway crimes, Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials are encouraging attendees to use public transportation to reach Times Square. Umbrellas, backpacks, large bags, coolers, chairs, and alcohol will not be allowed in the viewing area.

In conclusion, the NYPD is prepared to handle the large-scale event with the support of city, state, and federal partners. With a comprehensive security plan in place, attendees can expect a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.
