Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100, is set to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda in January, according to sources at Fox News. While specific dates for this solemn event have not yet been released, it is expected that Carter’s body will also lie in state at the Georgia State Capitol before a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral.

Carter will join a prestigious list of statesmen who have lain in state, including former President Abraham Lincoln and most recently former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in January 2022. The last U.S. president to lie in state was former President George H.W. Bush in November 2018.

Following Carter’s death, multiple observances are expected to take place in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The Carter Center announced that the final arrangements for his state funeral, including public events and motorcade routes, are still pending.

The late president will be privately interred in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he returned after his term in office from 1977 to 1981. Carter faced health challenges in his later years, including battling cancer that spread to his liver and brain. He entered hospice care in February 2023.

Carter’s passing came after the death of his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023 at the age of 96. His death elicited an outpouring of sympathy from across the political spectrum, with President-elect Trump acknowledging Carter’s contributions to the country.
