Offshore wind will not be allowed on Georges Bank

After much deliberation, Ottawa and Nova Scotia have made the decision to protect Georges Bank from offshore wind development. This area, known for its lucrative fishing grounds, is already safeguarded from offshore petroleum development. Nova Scotia Energy Minister Trevor Boudreau emphasized the importance of preserving this resource, stating that Georges Bank is essential for the fishing sector and must be utilized to its full potential.

In a joint effort, Boudreau and Jonathan Wilkinson, the federal minister of energy and natural resources, have directed their offshore energy regulator to implement a 10-year moratorium on placing turbines in Georges Bank. The moratorium can be extended if supported by both governments at the end of the term. This decision aligns with the shared goals of protecting the environment and economy while promoting a clean energy future.

The move to protect Georges Bank comes after months of uncertainty regarding its inclusion in offshore wind development areas. Nova Scotia and Ottawa have shown enthusiasm for offshore wind energy and commissioned a study suggesting that vast areas off the Atlantic coast could support wind energy projects. However, fisheries representatives have been advocating for formal protection of Georges Bank since last fall, raising concerns after Premier Tim Houston hinted at lifting all bans on natural resources.

The PC government led by Houston has made efforts to lift bans on fracking and explore the possibility of lifting a ban on uranium development. Despite these considerations, Boudreau’s department is currently in the process of selecting areas for the first round of bids for offshore wind licenses. They are reviewing recommendations from the offshore wind regional assessment committee and engaging with stakeholders to determine the best course of action.

The first call for offshore wind licenses is anticipated to take place later this year. By prioritizing the protection of Georges Bank, both governments are demonstrating their commitment to sustainable development and responsible resource management. This decision underscores the importance of striking a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation in the pursuit of a clean energy future.
