Oklahoma senator updates on son’s mystery illness, family health struggles

Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., recently provided an update on his son, Andrew, who has been receiving medical care at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Andrew has been undergoing tests to determine the cause of a potential mystery illness.

Mullin, whose eyes showed signs of bruising, presumably from a recent surgery, announced that Andrew was scheduled to undergo two procedures. In a video shared on Friday, Andrew expressed his desire to be fully sedated for the procedures, but the Mayo Clinic was reportedly unable to accommodate this request.

The senator revealed that his family has been facing various health issues, with himself undergoing eye surgery on April 11, his wife, Christie, undergoing major knee reconstructive surgery on April 8, and his mother suffering a stroke on the same day as his own procedure. Despite these challenges, Mullin shared on April 17 that his wife and mother were improving, as was he.

In the video posted on Tuesday, Mullin disclosed that Andrew had been experiencing health issues since January. Andrew, a wrestler at the University of Oklahoma, recounted experiencing severe side pain during practice, leading to a trip to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with fluid in his lungs and growth spots that were worsening.

Since the initial video update, Mullin has been providing regular updates on social media. The day after sharing the status of his family’s health, he announced that the Mayo Clinic had ruled out cancer as a potential cause for the growth spots in Andrew’s lungs.

A spokesperson for Mullin conveyed that the senator is currently at the Mayo Clinic supporting his son through the extensive testing process. The spokesperson emphasized that Mullin’s top priorities are God, family, and all others. Mullin has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support from the public in response to his family’s health challenges.
