Olivia Hussey, the iconic actress known for her role as Juliet in the 1968 film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, passed away at the age of 73. Her family announced her peaceful passing on Friday, surrounded by loved ones.
Hussey was only 15 when she was cast by director Franco Zeffirelli after he saw her perform in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie alongside Vanessa Redgrave. Her portrayal of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet earned her a Golden Globe for best new actress, alongside co-star Leonard Whiting.
In later years, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, alleging sexual abuse, harassment, and fraud related to nude scenes in the film. They claimed they were misled about the filming process, leading to a dismissal of their case by a Los Angeles County judge in 2023.
Whiting paid tribute to Hussey, expressing his sorrow at her passing and praising her beauty inside and out. The two actors shared a special bond from their time working together on the beloved film.
Born in Buenos Aires on April 17, 1951, Hussey moved to London as a child and honed her acting skills at the Italia Conti Academy drama school. In addition to Romeo and Juliet, she starred in various productions such as Jesus of Nazareth, Death on the Nile, Black Christmas, and Psycho IV: The Beginning.
