Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi cities rank high for most overweight in America

America is facing a major obesity crisis, with nearly 42% of U.S. adults classified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This alarming statistic is a result of various factors, including lack of access to healthy food options, limited education on proper nutrition, and the prevalence of fast food establishments. The National League of Cities recently reported that obesity-related healthcare costs in America have skyrocketed to $190.2 billion.
A recent study conducted by WalletHub compared 100 of the most populated metropolitan areas in the U.S. to determine which cities are the most overweight and obese in 2025. The study analyzed 19 key indicators of weight-related problems, including obesity rates, health consequences, and access to healthy food and fitness facilities.
The analysis revealed the top three most overweight cities in America. McAllen, Texas, claimed the number one spot, with Hidalgo County having the highest percentage of obese adults at 45%. Little Rock, Arkansas, followed closely behind as the second-most overweight city, with high rates of obesity among children and teenagers. Jackson, Mississippi, rounded out the top three, ranking number one for obesity and overweight, with a significant portion of residents being physically inactive.
These cities face challenges such as limited access to healthy food options, lack of recreational facilities, and high rates of weight-related diseases like diabetes and heart disease. The projected obesity rates for 2030 in these cities are also concerning, indicating that the problem is likely to persist in the future.
Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy diet to combat obesity. Dr. Cristina Palacios, a professor of Dietetics and Nutrition, recommends making small changes to improve diet gradually, such as replacing sugary beverages with water. These small changes can have a significant impact on overall health and weight management.
As America continues to grapple with the obesity epidemic, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. By addressing the root causes of obesity and making lifestyle changes, we can work towards a healthier future for all.
