On the Road: A warm summer day

Summer Bliss at McGregor Lake and Beyond

As the sun shone brightly on McGregor Lake near Milo, Ab., on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, it finally felt like a true summer day. The temperature was already pushing 20C by eight in the morning, creating the perfect setting for a day of exploration and discovery.

The sounds of ducks on the pond filled the air, accompanied by the gentle breeze carrying the scents of clover and sage. Flocks of sparrows, marsh wrens, yellowthroats, cedar waxwings, and kingbirds added to the symphony of nature surrounding the lake, creating a picturesque scene of prairie life.

The shoreline of McGregor Lake was bustling with wildlife, from butterflies fluttering around decaying plant material to loons swimming gracefully on the water. The sunflowers blooming on the dam added a pop of color to the landscape, while the fields of peas and wheat nearby were a testament to the abundance brought on by the summer rains.

Venturing further out into the prairie, the landscape continued to captivate with its lush greens and subtle hues. Cattle cooling off in ponds, grasshoppers hopping along highways, and cowbirds seeking shade from the heat painted a vivid picture of life in the countryside.

As the day progressed, the temperature rose, reaching 31C in some areas. The wildlife seemed to be feeling the heat, with birds panting and seeking refuge in shady spots. But amidst the warmth, the beauty of nature continued to shine, from the vibrant sunflowers to the iridescence of white-faced ibises’ feathers.

Driving through fields of wheat and barley, watching combines harvest peas, and observing ladybug nymphs prowling for prey, it was clear that nature was in full swing. The day was filled with moments of awe and wonder, from tiny crab spiders waiting for prey to mule deer bucks nibbling on green pods.

As the day came to a close and the temperature began to cool, memories of summers past flooded the mind. The sights and sounds of the prairie evoked nostalgia for days spent swimming in irrigation canals and fishing at Little Axe Flats.

Despite the challenges of a cool and wet summer, this day at McGregor Lake and beyond felt like a true summer blessing. Sweaty and dusty, with the wind in my hair, I headed back to town, grateful for the beauty and serenity of the prairie on a perfect summer day.
