One injured in Spryfield duplex fire Thursday morning
One person was injured when fire erupted at a duplex on Sylvia Avenue in Spryfield Thursday morning.
Halifax Regional firefighters were called to the two-storey building shortly after 10 a.m.
Crews “arrived quickly and found the duplex with significant fire showing, but did knock it down and bring it under control very quickly,” Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum said. “A lot of the fire was on the exterior of the building.”
There was significant damage to the building. Almost the entire front was burned. Firefighters were initially fighting the fire defensively before moving into the burning building. It appeared that the bulk of the fire was on the unit on the right side of the building.
Came upstairs to sound of the fire truck to see what was going on, the house was totally red in flames, they had it quickly under control by time I got my Pets in carriers pic.twitter.com/GAZLZL0Kga

Firefighters were on the scene for a couple of hours doing overhaul and searching for any hidden fire.
Meldrum said one person was treated by paramedics for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. It’s not known whether the person was an occupant of the home.
There was a small natural gas leak reported on the property during the fire, but it was contained by workers for the gas company and there was no perceived risk to the neighbourhood, Meldrum said.
It’s too early to say whether the fire was a result of the leak or if the leak started because of the fire, he said. A department fire investigator was on their way to the scene late Thursday morning. There were no reports on any explosions that he was aware of.
Traffic on the road was shut down for a time while crews worked at the scene.
