Ontario horse trainer suspended over suspected racehorse death

A racehorse trainer has been suspended for three years and fined $11,000 for the suspicious death of a horse.

Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission says an investigation found the trainer violated multiple rules of standard races.

It says the offenses include an act of neglect, providing misleading information about the horse’s whereabouts, behavior not in the best interest of racing and failure to report the racehorse’s death.

The AGCO says the trainer is suspended until July 2026.

The commission acts as the regulatory body for all forms of horse racing in Ontario, including the operation of racecourses and race participants.

All AGCO decisions may be appealed to the Horse Racing Appeal Panel, an independent body authorized to hear appeals against decisions.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on July 13, 2023.
