Oregon AG creates sanctuary ‘toolkit’ ahead of likely Trump-Homan illegal immigration crackdown

Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum recently introduced a bilingual “Sanctuary Promise Community Toolkit” to help residents understand and uphold the state’s laws. The toolkit aims to educate individuals on their rights to live, work, play, and learn safely in Oregon.

In 1987, Oregon passed HB 2314, making it the first sanctuary state in the country in response to raids by INS. The law prevents state and local law enforcement from using resources to apprehend suspects solely based on their immigration status. Over the years, sanctuary laws have become a contentious issue, but Rosenblum is committed to ensuring that Oregonians are aware of their rights.

The toolkit includes resources such as documents related to the 1987 law’s passage, FAQs on encounters with ICE, a hotline to report violations, and a law enforcement bias response toolkit. It also features conversations with individuals involved in passing the law and press coverage on the topic.

Rosenblum urges Oregonians to discuss the issue with their families and be prepared in case immigration officials come to their homes or businesses. Knowing your rights in advance is crucial, she emphasizes.

Former ICE Director Thomas Homan has been appointed as the “border czar” by President-elect Trump, signaling a tough stance on immigration enforcement. Homan has vowed to crack down on immigration law violators and illegal immigrants.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has been approached for comment on the matter. The state is taking proactive steps to ensure that residents are informed and protected under the sanctuary laws.
