Oscar-nominated actor Graham Greene dead at 73

The entertainment industry has lost a true legend with the passing of Oscar-nominated actor Graham Greene at the age of 73. His manager, Gerry Jordan, confirmed the sad news to CBC News, stating that Greene died peacefully in Stratford, Ont.

Greene, a member of the Oneida tribe from the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, was best known for his captivating performances in films such as “Dances with Wolves,” where he portrayed the role of Kicking Bird, a Sioux medicine man. This role earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also starred in notable films like “The Green Mile” with Tom Hanks and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

On the small screen, Greene graced audiences with his talent in shows like “Northern Exposure” in the 1990s and more recently in “Reservation Dogs” and “The Last of Us.” His versatility as an actor was truly remarkable.

In a recent interview with CBC Q’s Tom Power, Greene reflected on his journey into acting, sharing how he stumbled into the industry while working as a roadie. Despite knowing nothing about the theatre at the time, he took a chance and fell in love with the craft.

Throughout his nearly five-decade-long career, Greene accumulated an impressive array of accolades, including two Gemini Awards, a Canadian Screen Award for his role in “Seeds,” a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children, and the prestigious Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2025. He was also a proud member of the Order of Canada.

Fellow actor Tom Jackson, who shared the screen with Greene in projects like “Medicine River” and “Spirit Bay,” fondly remembered Greene as a friend and brother. Jackson praised Greene’s dedication to the craft, emphasizing his belief that to succeed in show business, one must master all aspects of the industry.
