Ottawa Charge bring ‘relentless’ identity to nation’s capital in 2nd PWHL campaign

The Ottawa Charge are gearing up for the second season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League with a revamped roster, a new identity, and a redefined mentality. Despite missing the playoffs by just three points in the inaugural season, head coach Carla MacLeod has instilled a sense of relentlessness in her team.

“Our mentality is built on relentlessness,” MacLeod stated during training camp, emphasizing the importance of embracing the physical aspect of the game. The Charge have focused on strengthening key areas in the off-season, especially through the draft.

With the second overall pick, Ottawa selected forward Danielle Serdachny, a high-flying talent known for her elite skills and physical presence on the ice. Serdachny, who scored the overtime winner in Canada’s gold-medal win at the world championships, has already made an impact during the pre-season.

In addition to Serdachny, the Charge added Finnish defender Ronja Savolainen, a strong blueliner who excelled in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League last season. Savolainen’s versatility and physicality make her a perfect fit for Ottawa’s new identity.

Star goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer will have some support this season with the addition of Gwyneth Philips, a record-breaking goalie from Northeastern University. Philips’ impressive career save percentage and experience make her a valuable asset to the team.

However, the Charge suffered a setback when top goal-scorer Daryl Watts signed with the Toronto Sceptres in free agency. Despite this loss, Ottawa has signed several new players, including forward Rebecca Leslie and goaltender Logan Angers.

Looking ahead, MacLeod emphasized the need for the team to raise their compete level and be the toughest team to play against. With a roster full of talent and a renewed mentality, the Charge are ready to make a statement in the upcoming season.
