Outbreaks of Legionnires’ disease again in London, on., As probably the source has found

Public Health Officials in London, Ontario, have declared a re-emergence of Legionnaires’ disease following the confirmation of 25 new cases and the identification of the probable source of the bacteria.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced on Tuesday that tests conducted at the Sofina Foods factory in the city’s East End revealed a match with the subtype of Legionella bacteria associated with the outbreak. Despite this discovery, the health unit assured the public that food products from Sofina Foods remain safe for consumption, as Legionnaires’ disease is primarily transmitted through the inhalation of water droplets containing the bacteria, rather than through food or drink.
Legionella bacteria are naturally found in soil and water and can thrive in environments such as cooling towers, hot water tanks, and air conditioning systems in large buildings. While previous samples taken from cooling towers in London did not align with the outbreak cases, the recent findings at the Sofina Foods factory have shed new light on the situation.
The outbreak, which has been linked to severe pneumonia, has affected at least 94 individuals, resulting in four fatalities and 86 hospitalizations. The health unit had initially declared an end to the outbreak on August 6, following a period of no new reported cases since July 9. However, the recent surge in cases has prompted a reevaluation of the situation.
Dr. Joanne Kearon, Associate Medical Officer of Health, expressed concern over the unexpected resurgence of the disease and emphasized the need for continued vigilance in combating the bacteria. Sofina Foods, in response to the latest test results, has pledged to conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures to address any lingering traces of Legionella bacteria.
The health unit stressed the importance of ongoing cooperation from all parties involved, including the construction operator of the affected facility, in order to effectively manage the outbreak. Moving forward, additional measures will be implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
As the investigation into the outbreak continues, health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow recommended safety protocols to prevent further spread of Legionnaires’ disease. By working together and staying informed, we can effectively combat this bacterial threat and protect the health of our community.
