Over 100 parties interested in repurposing Site C work camp, B.C. Hydro says
The $470-million Site C work camp, soon to be decommissioned by B.C. Hydro following the completion of the $16-billion dam, is facing a potential future of repurposing rather than being sent to the landfill. With over 100 interested parties, including First Nations, an addictions recovery center, and tourism operators, expressing interest in the facility, there is hope for a new life for the camp.
Peace River Regional District (PRRD) Area C director Brad Sperling emphasized the importance of not sending the camp to the landfill, as it would prematurely end the operational life of the North Peace Regional Landfill. Building a new landfill can take up to a decade and cost millions of dollars, a burden the PRRD is not prepared to take on.
First Nations are lobbying B.C. Hydro to donate the buildings to meet the need for on-reserve housing, with 25 nations, including Halfway River, Saulteau, Lheidli T’enneh, Haida, and Metlakatla, interested in repurposing the camp. The North Winds Wellness Center in Pouce Coupe is also seeking to utilize the camp for a mental health and addictions treatment program, aiming to create a national wellness center for excellence.
While there are options for dismantling the camp through scrap metal dealers, concrete recyclers, and salvage companies, the focus is on repurposing and reusing the facility.
