P.E.I. cancer survivor’s ‘unbelievable’ 120-km triathlon captured in new documentary

A remarkable new documentary is set to debut, telling the inspiring story of Michelle Hughes, a woman from P.E.I. who defied the odds and completed a 120-kilometre triathlon from Moncton Hospital in New Brunswick back to her home in P.E.I. This incredible journey was captured in the documentary titled “The Journey Home.”

Three years ago, Hughes received a devastating diagnosis of a rare cancer called Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) and was told she had only three to five years to live. Instead of accepting this prognosis, she decided to embark on a challenging triathlon on the third anniversary of her diagnosis. Despite not knowing how to swim or cycle and only recently taking up running, Hughes pushed herself to complete this extraordinary feat.

The mental challenge proved to be just as significant as the physical one for Hughes. She expressed feeling empowered by her accomplishment, stating, “Physical, you could just get there eventually.” Her primary motivation for undertaking the triathlon was to show her children that cancer does not define her and that she is capable of achieving things she never thought possible.

Facing unwelcome side effects from her cancer treatment, including difficulty eating and drinking, weight loss, and muscle depletion, Hughes persevered through months of training to prepare for the triathlon. Her husband, Ty Hughes, who supported her throughout the journey, shared his excitement in watching her develop her athletic abilities.

The couple had not initially planned to create a documentary, but a friend, Lance Phillips, captured the footage and turned it into a full-fledged production. The documentary showcases the challenges and triumphs of Hughes’ journey, emphasizing the message of hope that she wants viewers to take away.

Despite living with incurable cancer, Hughes remains optimistic and determined. She emphasized the importance of holding onto hope throughout her battle, stating, “I’ve never lost hope this entire time.” The documentary, “The Journey Home,” will be screened at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall at Holland College in Charlottetown on Nov. 16, with streaming options available on Hughes’ website.

Hughes continues to face the reality of living with cancer, but her resilience and positive outlook serve as an inspiration to others. As she navigates the ups and downs of her health journey, she remains focused on living each day to the fullest and spreading a message of hope and perseverance.
