Partnership in Antigonish provides thousands of meals for those in need

A heartwarming initiative in Antigonish is providing much-needed meals to individuals facing food insecurity. The Antigonish Community Fridge, in collaboration with Sodexo, a food service company catering to St. Francis Xavier University students, offers packaged meals to those in need.
This commendable program, which commenced last year, aims to reduce food wastage by distributing meals that would have otherwise been discarded. Approximately 13,000 meals have been distributed through this initiative, highlighting the significant impact it has had on the community.
Catherine MacPherson, one of the organizers of the community fridge, expressed gratitude for the support received from Sodexo, emphasizing that the saved food is now being utilized to help those in need. Sodexo has received funding to cover the packaging costs, underscoring the commitment to sustain the program.
Tim Hierlihy, the general manager of Sodexo, highlighted the importance of addressing food insecurity in the community, recognizing food as a precious resource. Meals are made available at various locations, including the library, the Antigonish farmers’ market, and the community fridge in Havre Boucher, to meet the high demand for assistance.
MacPherson shared heartening feedback from beneficiaries of the program, noting how it has positively impacted their lives by stretching their budgets and providing essential meals. Hierlihy has appealed for additional funding from the town to expand the program and ensure its continuity in the future.
Despite the success of the initiative, MacPherson lamented the necessity for such programs in society, questioning why so many individuals struggle with food security. She urged the province to prioritize efforts to alleviate food insecurity and ensure that all Nova Scotians have access to affordable and nutritious food.
The Antigonish Community Fridge exemplifies the power of community partnerships in addressing social issues and supporting those in need. By coming together to tackle food insecurity, the initiative serves as a beacon of hope and compassion for individuals facing challenges in accessing basic necessities.
