Pat Stay stabbed after verbal altercation and a shove, witness tells murder trial

A tragic incident unfolded at a Halifax nightclub, where battle rapper Pat Stay was fatally stabbed in the early hours of September 4, 2022. The second-degree murder trial of Adam Drake shed light on the events leading up to the fatal altercation, as testified by Brinn McKenzie, a server at the Yacht Social Club on Lower Water Street.

McKenzie, who was providing bottle service to patrons in the VIP section that fateful night, recounted a verbal confrontation between Stay and another man, later identified as Drake. She described the man in the white shirt, believed to be Drake, as being at odds with Stay when he arrived. Stay greeted everyone at the table except for the man in the white shirt, which led to an exchange of words and a physical altercation where Stay shoved the other man.

Despite McKenzie not witnessing the stabbing firsthand and not seeing a weapon, she recalled the moment Stay turned and she saw blood, indicating the severity of the situation. Stay, who slipped in the blood as he tried to flee the scene, was later pronounced dead in the hospital. Drake, who was arrested a few days after the incident, is currently on trial for the murder of Pat Stay.

During the trial, a video expert enhanced the security footage from the nightclub, though the grainy quality made it challenging to identify individuals. McKenzie was only able to recognize herself in the enhanced video, highlighting the difficulty in determining the identities of those involved in the altercation.

As the trial unfolds, more details surrounding the tragic events of that night are expected to come to light. Stay’s untimely death has left a void in the community, and the pursuit of justice for his murder will continue as the trial progresses. The trial is set to continue until mid-June, with hopes of bringing closure to this devastating chapter in Halifax’s nightlife history.
