Paul Bernardo goes back before parole board later this month
Paul Bernardo to Face Parole Board Again for Infamous Canadian Murders
Paul Bernado, the notorious killer responsible for some of the most disturbing murders in modern Canadian history, is set to appear before the parole board later this month.
Bernardo is currently serving a life sentence for the brutal kidnapping, sexual assault, and murders of teenagers Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy in the early 1990s. As a dangerous offender, his chances of ever being released from prison are slim.
In addition to his convictions for the murders of French and Mahaffy, Bernardo was also found guilty of manslaughter in the death of 15-year-old Tammy Homolka, the younger sister of his then-wife Karla Homolka. He has also admitted to sexually assaulting other women.
His upcoming parole hearing is scheduled for November 26.
During his previous appearance before the parole board, Bernardo was criticized for his limited understanding and insight into his crimes.
\”It was evident today that you continue to exhibit behaviors that are counter-productive to the development of insight,\” said Maureen Gauci, one of the parole hearing officers, in 2021. \”You have not shown that the risk of offending can be managed in the community.\”
The families of Bernardo’s victims have argued against his frequent parole applications, as it forces them to relive the horrors of his crimes.
During the 2021 parole hearing, the French family described Bernardo as an \”evil dark cloud\” that continues to haunt their lives.
Bernardo’s controversial transfer to a medium-security prison in Quebec last year sparked outrage and calls for changes in how dangerous offenders are handled.
Following a review, the Correctional Service of Canada determined that all proper procedures were followed during Bernardo’s transfer, but acknowledged that the victims’ families should have been better informed.
