Pearson Airport in Toronto is getting a hydrogen filling station

Pearson Airport in Toronto will be home to Ontario’s first public hydrogen refueling station.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Carlsun Energy announced in a press release Thursday that the gas station will accommodate both cars and trucks.

Carlsun will build, own and operate the station, which the two groups say is made possible by a $1 million investment from Natural Resources Canada.

The GTAA said this station is part of Pearson Airport’s commitment to clean and efficient energy solutions.

There are currently five hydrogen stations across the country, with four in British Columbia and the fifth in Quebec, according to Natural Resources Canada.

“With a significant portion of Canada’s emissions coming from the Ontario transportation sector, it is imperative that we begin deploying hydrogen infrastructure in transportation corridors,” said Carlsun president Jason Van Geel in the press release.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said the new station will ensure supply chains continue to grow in the fight against climate change.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on July 6, 2023.
