Pence backs Trump’s ‘hawkish’ tariffs on China but warns it ‘must not become our enemy’
Former Vice President Mike Pence recently voiced his support for the “hawkish” tariffs that President-elect Trump plans to impose on China, while also emphasizing the need for the U.S. to carefully navigate its complex relationship with Beijing. Pence made these remarks during a speech to the U.S.-based China General Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night.
“The threats of additional tariffs on China and other nations are not empty threats,” Pence stated. “I believe that by making strategic decisions that focus on the future, America’s relationship with China can ultimately improve – not in spite of President Trump’s tough stance on China, but because of it.”
Pence acknowledged that China is a rival and economic adversary to the U.S., but cautioned against allowing it to become an enemy. He emphasized the importance of finding a balance in the relationship between the two countries.
President-elect Trump has proposed imposing a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico and Canada as one of his first actions in office, in addition to an extra 10% tariff on Chinese imports until China addresses issues such as illegal fentanyl smuggling. These tariffs are intended to incentivize these countries to address trade abuses and intellectual property theft.
Tariffs are essentially taxes imposed on goods entering the U.S., and they can lead to increased costs for American consumers. The Trump administration implemented tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of products during their time in office, and the Biden administration has largely maintained these tariffs while also imposing additional tax increases on Chinese goods.
Despite concerns about the economic impact of tariffs, Pence reassured American and Chinese business owners that these measures are necessary to bring China back to the negotiating table and address trade imbalances. He expressed confidence in President-elect Trump’s ability to balance diplomacy with tough economic policies.
Pence stressed that the goal of tariffs is not to isolate or restrain China, but rather to promote better relations through actions and reforms that will benefit both countries in the long run. He highlighted the importance of a firm but fair approach in achieving this objective.
After four years of serving alongside President Trump, Pence affirmed his belief in Trump’s ability to effectively manage the U.S.-China relationship and navigate the complexities of international trade. He emphasized the importance of maintaining respectful diplomacy while also implementing strong economic policies.
In conclusion, Pence’s remarks underscore the Trump administration’s commitment to addressing trade issues with China through tariffs, while also emphasizing the potential for improved relations between the two countries in the future.
