PETA calls to end Groundhog Day tradition, retire Punxsutawney Phil with cake alternative

PETA Calls for Groundhog Day Tradition to be Replaced with Vegan “Weather Reveal” Cake

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is known for advocating for the rights and well-being of animals, and their latest proposal is no exception. The animal rights nonprofit organization is calling for the beloved American tradition of Groundhog Day to be axed, and instead replaced with a vegan “weather reveal” cake.

In a news release on Jan. 20, PETA announced their proposal to deliver a delicious vegan cake each Groundhog Day in perpetuity if the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club agrees to let Punxsutawney Phil and his family retire to a reputable sanctuary. PETA argues that this move would earn the organization kudos from wildlife fans.

The letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club from PETA emphasized the stress and discomfort that Punxsutawney Phil experiences during his annual duties. The groundhog is a shy prey animal who, in his natural habitat, would actively avoid humans. Yet, year after year, Phil is transported to Gobler’s Knob, subjected to loud noises, screaming crowds, and flashing lights – all against his natural instincts.

PETA president Ingrid Newkirk called for Groundhog Day officials to “sprinkle some happiness” into Phil’s life by allowing him to retire. She highlighted the fact that when allowed to live naturally, groundhogs avoid humans, create intricate burrows, communicate with each other, and even climb trees – all behaviors that Phil is denied in captivity.

Despite not receiving a response from the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, PETA remains hopeful that the organization will consider developing kinder and more innovative traditions that prioritize the well-being of animals. The spokesperson for PETA suggested that replacing Punxsutawney Phil with a vegan “Weather Reveal” cake would be a positive step towards ending the exploitation of wild animals.

Groundhog Day has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1887, with thousands of observers gathering in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to see Phil predict the weather. Tradition holds that if Phil sees his shadow and runs away, six more weeks of winter will follow. However, if he doesn’t see his shadow, spring will arrive sooner.

In 2024, Phil predicted an early spring by not seeing his shadow, marking a rare occurrence in the tradition’s history.

As PETA continues to advocate for the rights of animals, their call to replace the Groundhog Day tradition with a vegan alternative reflects their commitment to creating a more compassionate world for all living beings.
